HISTORY: Kola a member othe family of species of trees botanically called STERCUTIACEAE, has a long history in West Africa. The use of kolanut,the seed or product of kolanutis intermitently woven with the various cultures of the Ibo tribe in Nigeria. It's uses feature prominently in the religious,social,marital and ritual rites of the ibo people.They used during ceremonies related to local worship procedures,child naming, marriage, funeral, social gathering and friendly reception and entertainment of guests at home and as sacrificial objects to various gods and goddesses of Ibo mythology.
ORIGIN OF KOLANUT: Johannes Leo Africanus was the first to refer to the kola in 1556, a Portuguese, Odorado Lopes recorded the occurance of kolanut trees in Congo Tropical forest in 1591.susequently; the tree was found growing wild along the west african coast from Gambia to Angola, prior to the discovery of the kola tree by foreign botanists, it would appear that the edible value of the kolanut had already been discovered in Ibo land.
